Melbourne Convention & Exhibition Centre reopens

The $205 million Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre (MCEC) expansion project has now officially opened, featuring a 9000 square metre multi-purpose event space with a retractable 1000 seat theatre. The expansion has seen an increase of 20,000 square meters taking the total area of the space to 70,000 square meters of new exhibition halls, meeting rooms and outdoor dining areas.


The Sebel expands in Perth

On 9 July 2018, AccorHotels announced the opening of the new Sebel West Perth Aire Apartments, which will add 64 new studio apartment style rooms to their portfolio. In a prime location close to key tourist attractions and Perth International Airport, The Sebel occupies the first four levels of the 22-level Aire West Perth apartment tower. It features a 22m heated swimming pool, pool deck, fitness centre, sauna, and outdoor dining area.


Tourism Australia refurbishes Chinese portal

After conducting research with local events planners, Tourism Australia has relaunched its Chinese language website to make the Australia more appealing to it’s number one trading partner. The new website is integrated with Chinese social media and features highly relevant information for business and leisure travellers looking visit.


Mitchelton Hotel and Spa join MGallery by Sofitel brand

MGallery by Sofitel has added the Mitchelton Hotel and Spa to its network. Located on the banks of the Goulburn Valley, the $16 million hotel is home to 58-rooms, 4-treatment room day spa, restaurant, 20m lap pool and extensive banquet and meeting facilities.


Hayman Island Whitsundays to rebrand under IHG

The 166-room Hayman Island Whitsundays will be rebranded and reopened as a $100 million luxury InterContinental Hotel in 2019. The hotel is located in one of the world’s most unique locations accessible only by luxury vessel or helicopter from the neighbouring Hamilton Island.


Art Series Hotel: World’s Latest Checkout

From 16 July until 19 September 2018, Art Series Hotel is bringing back their hugely popular World’s Latest Checkout. Guests can extend their check out time to 1pm, 3pm, early evening or the next day until the next guest checks in to the room, providing they call reception between 8am and 10am.


Launceston’s iconic new Peppers Silo Hotel officially opens its doors

The iconic new Peppers Silo Hotel in Launceston officially opened on Saturday 2 June 2018. Embracing the historical Kings Wharf grain silos that were originally erected in 1960, the hotel offers 108 guest rooms – 52 of which are inside the renovated silo barrels. The redevelopment of the site also includes undercover car parking, conference facilities for up to 500 people, and an onsite restaurant and bar called Grain of the Silos.


Accor and Invictus partner up

AccorHotels has been announced as the Official Accommodation Supplier of Prince Harry’s Invictus Games Sydney 2018. The Pullman, Novotel and ibis Sydney Part will be host to over 500 competitors from 18 nations from 20-27 October 2018.


Report shows new trends in tourism numbers

Data released by Tourism Research Australia shows that inbound numbers to Australia are increasing bolstered by guests from China, Hong Kong and the US. However visitors are spending less time domestically despite a majority of this growth among visitors in a higher age bracket. The report also showed that the southern states have experienced the most benefit in tourism with Tasmania experiencing the highest surge in visitors and spending.


Adelaide to host major medical conference

Adelaide has been announced as the host city of the 2024 World Congress on Medical Physics and Biomedical Engineering. The triennial event will be held from 12 October 2024 to 18 October 2024 will welcome delegates from a number of international organisations including the World Health Organisation (WHO) and similar bodies.


BCEC wins top catering accolade

Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre (BCEC) has been recognised as the top national caterer at the 2018 Meetings & Events Australia (MEA) National Awards. The venue’s Food & Beverage team has also been distinguished as ‘World’s Best,’ in a global client based survey for the AIPC World’s Best Convention Centre Award.


Melbourne Airport Rental returns

Melbourne Airport’s refurbishments are now finished and access to the Hertz rental car area have changed. The rental car lane is now through the short-term car park entry, keep an eye out for the signage to follow.


New Zealand

New look for Auckland Mercure

As of 1 June 2018 the Mercure Auckland has been rebranded to the Grand Mercure Auckland after receiving a NZ$22 million refurbishment. Host to 207 guest rooms and suites, the rooms have been fully refurbished in harmonious textures and botanic shades. It now offers the largest event space of any hotel in the Britomart area, with capacity for 350 cocktail style.


Hotel Indigo to open in Auckland

The Hotel Indigo brand will be introduced to New Zealand in 2021 after IHG signed a deal with Australasian property developer Ninety Four Feet. The proposed 225-room Hotel Indigo Auckland will be located in one of the city’s tallest buildings as part of a mixed-use development in Auckland Central. The space will also contain food and beverage and residential facilities in the heart of the North Island capital.
