Marriott International signs agreement to debut the JW Marriott Brand in New Zealand

Marriott International is introducing its JW Marriott brand to New Zealand, with the property currently known as the Stamford Plaza set to be fully converted into Marriott’s JW Marriott brand by mid 2024. The luxurious 286-room hotel is expected to feature multiple dining options, along with 320 sqm (around the size of a tennis court) of function space and four meeting rooms that will provide the ideal space for guests to connect socially over a meaningful gathering.


Hyatt launches new suite of event resources across Asia Pacific

Hyatt Hotels has launched ‘Together by Hyatt’, a new suite of event solutions across the group’s Asia-Pacific hotels to help each business deliver events more effectively. The initiative has been designed to provide a seamless experience for event planners and cater for the rapidly rising demand for business events. ‘Together by Hyatt’ offers enhanced hygiene protocols, streamlined technology platforms, a new team of hybrid event experts, and new series of guided well-being experiences. IHG’s Six Senses luxury resort brand to have its Australian debut in 2025

IHG Hotels & resorts are bringing its Six Senses luxury resort brand to Australia. The rustic-luxe resort is located at Burnham Beeches, a heritage Art Deco mansion and 22-hectare estate in the Dandenong Ranges, just 40 kilometres from Melbourne. The resort will initially feature 43 guest accommodations and hospitality venues that include a welcome lounge and terrace, a restaurant with outdoor seating, a library bar, and a rooftop retreat.


Intercontinental Sydney’s is refurbishment now complete

Breathing new life into the landmark Intercontinental Sydney, the hotel’s two-year refurbishment is complete! The hotel now features 509 rooms and suites in green and blue tones, a refurbished entrance and reception area, a grand lobby bar and a public rooftop bar offering sweeping city skyline views, including Sydney Opera House and the Harbour Bridge. Altogether, the hotel offers 14 versatile and refined meeting & event spaces.


Accor opens Sydney’s newest Mercure Hotel

In early October, Accor opened the doors of Sydney’s newest Mercure Hotel, Mercure Sydney Martin Place. Located in the heart of the CBD, the 86-room hotel offers versatile function spaces which feature natural light and state of the art audio visual facilities. This hotel’s conference spaces vary to accommodate 14 to 400 delegates, and are ideal for small meetings and seminars, as well as mid-sized and large conferences. All meetings and events held at Mercure Sydney are carbon neutral and benefit from the hotel’s Mindful Meetings menu options, allowing businesses to deliver more sustainable events.


W Sydney Hotel to welcome guests from October 2023

The W Sydney hotel is set to welcome guests in October 2023. The luxury hotel will feature a curved exterior, 585 sophisticated rooms and suites, an impressive two story rooftop bar, and a heated infinity pool offering guests sweeping harbour views. The hotel will also feature 9 event rooms offering 1018 sqm (about twice the area of a basketball court) of combined event space and capacity for up to 805 delegates (in the largest space).


Accor partners with Panthers Group to open a new Pullman hotel in Penrith

Accor is partnering with Western Sydney sporting organisation Panthers Group to open a five-star Pullman hotel in Penrith in late 2023. The new 153-room hotel will be part of the new state-of-the-art Penrith Panthers precinct, serving as a business and entertainment destination. The hotel will be adjoined to and will service the new 1,250 sqm Western Sydney Conference Centre (WSCC), which will host trade shows, exhibitions, and seated functions for up to 1,000 people.The WSCC is also expected to open in late 2023 and will feature a range of onsite facilities, including a restaurant and bar with private dining rooms and a café.


Amphlett House opens as part of Laneways by Ovolo

On 10 November, Ovolo opened its new venue Amphlett House within the Laneways by Ovolo hotel in Melbourne’s CBD. Led by Andrea Gualdi and Melbourne chef Ian Curley, the food concept for the 120 seat taphouse is described as “elevated pub dining”. The venues’ beverage selection strongly focuses on locally brewed and sourced product, featuring beer from boutique Australian breweries and 75% of the wines from local producers.


Swiss-Belhotel Brisbane set to open in 2023

Swiss-Belhotel International is set to open a new hotel in Brisbane in April 2023. Located in Woolloongabba, the Swiss-Belhotel Brisbane offer guests proximity to the Brisbane CBD and the Gabba Stadium, which will be the epicentre of the Brisbane Olympic Games in 2032. The 11-storey hotel will feature 110 rooms, suites, and two penthouses, a rooftop bar and dining area, and multi-functional conference space.


The Royce Melbourne’s transformation is complete

Following a two-year restoration and refurbishment, The Royce Melbourne will reopen on February 1, 2023. The transformed hotel features 94 unique rooms with 18 spacious suites, a 24-hour concierge, a french-inspired restaurant, Showroom bar, two spaces designed for private events and three separate boardrooms.

Events and Travel.

Virgin Australia returns to New Zealand 

Virgin Australia has resumed flights to New Zealand, with Queenstown as its sole trans-Tasman port. The routes will depart on the Boeing 737s, with daily flights to Queenstown from Sydney and Brisbane and four weekly flights to Queenstown from Melbourne.


Auckland sees surge in business events 

Auckland has seen a steady rise in business events, with 102 events occuring during the 2021/22 financial year. The Auckland Convention Bureau (ACB) predicts that Auckland Business events will boost Auckland’s economy by NZ$75.5 million over the coming years.


Qantas to resume Brisbane-Tokyo services

As of 1 December, Qantas will resume services between Brisbane and Tokyo, with three weekly services scheduled. Services will operate on the airline’s Airbus A330 which features lie-flat Business Suites. Arriving at Hanada Airport, eligible passengers will enjoy access to the first class and business class lounges of Oneworld member Japan Airlines. Melbourne-Tokyo services are scheduled to resume in March 2023.


American Airlines resumes direct flights between LAX and SYD

As of 29 October, American Airlines has resumed its daily Los Angeles to Sydney service. Flights will once again depart Sydney at 11.15 am for a 7.00 am (local time) arrival in Los Angeles the same day. Flights will operate on the airlines’ Boeing 787-9 until 16 December, when the Boeing 777-300ER will take over the route, offering passengers the option to fly first class.


Adelaide Convention Bureau rebrands to Business Events Adelaide

The Adelaide Convention Bureau has re-branded to Business Events Adelaide. According to Business Events Adelaide CEO Damien Kitto, the new name and brand better reflects the organisation’s mission.


Virgin Australia reopens ‘Premium Entry’ lanes in Sydney and Brisbane

Virgin Australia has reopened the Premium Entry facilities in Sydney and Brisbane Airports, allowing business class travellers and top-tier frequent flyers to spend less time in security lines and be fast-tracked to the lounge. For the time being, Premium Entry lanes are only open during peak travel times; 5.00 am to 7.00 am on weekday mornings in Sydney and 5.00 am to 10.00 am on weekday mornings in Brisbane.
